The CDC′s Mission is to collaborate to create the expertise, information, and tools that people and communities need to protect their health – through health promotion, prevention of disease, injury and disability, and preparedness for new health threats.

Try CDC Sortable Stats, Sortable Stats is an interactive data set of behavioral risk factors and health indicators. The data set combines statistics from all U.S. States, U.S. Territories and the District of Columbia. Users can view, sort and analyze data at the state, regional and national level.  Microsoft Sliverlight, a free plug-in, is required to run Sortable Stats.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a whole host of statistical and data resources available for researchers in the public health arena. One of these is CDC WONDER (Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research). WONDER provides statistical research data published by the CDC, as well as reference materials, reports, and guidelines on health-realted topics. 

The CDC Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity’s Data, Trends and Maps online tool allows you to search for and view indicators related to nutrition, physical activity and obesity. You can search on the basis of a specific location or an indicator

The 500 Cities project is a collaboration between CDC, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the CDC Foundation. The purpose of the 500 Cities Project is to provide city- and census tract-level small area estimates for chronic disease risk factors, health outcomes, and clinical preventive service use for the largest 500 cities in the United States.

Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.

The CDC's National Environmental Public Health tracking Program is building a national integrated environmental and public health information system that supports national efforts to standardize and facilitate the electronic exchange of information. Linking environmental and health data will enable a timely response to potential health problems related to the environment.

The U.S. Census Bureau's Fact Finder is a central, comprehensive source for U.S. population, housing, demographic and geographic data.

The Statistical Abstract of the United States, published since 1878, is the authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States. NOTE: The Statistical Abstract is no longer being updated by the federal government.  However, the data is still available from the Census Bureau and other federal departments.
