Racial Equity Challenge

This guide provides resources for individuals, teams, departments and units to engage in developing racial literacy, learning more about racial equity issues, and reflection towards building a more diverse, equitable, inclusive and anti-racist community.

Challenge Overview

Diversity is a key pillar of UMass Chan's strategic plan to improve educational and clinical outcomes for learners and patients, and to build capacity towards greater equity as an academic medical research center and hub for the diverse communities that call our region home. This Anti-Racist Challenge was developed to encourage learning and professional development in these important topics. Throughout this guide you will be encouraged to Read, Watch, Listen and Engage actively with the content presented.

Participants have the option to complete a 21-Day Challenge or to continue their learning for a full 30-Day Challenge. Each week's content addresses a particular theme, addressing foundational history and frameworks for understanding then turning towards learning ways participants can take a more active role in anti-racist work. Each day features a selection of recommended activities and probing questions to Read, Watch, Listen and Engage with. Participants don't have to do every one, but we encourage you to select at least 2. We also encourage you to take time to journal your reflections each day in response to the questions prompts and recommended activities. If you are engaging with this challenge as part of a larger group we invite you to find ways to share your learning as a community in your physical and virtual spaces such a Jamboards, weekly huddles, Teams and Zoom discussion groups.


Challenge Objectives


This is a self-directed challenge; participants’ knowledge and skill building will depend upon the level of investment they are able to make through participation with the provided materials. We recognize that each of us has variable bandwidth. We encourage participants to return to these materials as a reference and resource beyond their participation in the challenge itself. We also invite participants to join us for the challenge more than once. Each time you go through the materials you will bring a new perspective and new personal experiences and will have a new learning experience as a result. By the end of the challenge active participants should be able to:

  • Define key terms related to racial equity such as anti-racism, implicit bias, critical theory, intersectionality, equity, and microaggression
  • Discuss one’s own racial identity, privilege, positionality and intersectional identities
  • Summarize key events and policies that illustrate the historical marginalization of racial minorities in the United States
  • Critically evaluate policy to identify and mitigate potential sources of bias in policies and procedures encountered within one’s work and community
  • Identify resources for on-going learning and personal development on the topic of racial equity and anti-racism
  • Discover opportunities to elevate marginalized voices, sponsor under-represented colleagues, and celebrate minoritized creators within one’s work and community
