About EndNote

EndNote is a bibliographic management tool that allows users to create and organize a library of citations and abstracts and then insert them into a Microsoft Word document.

EndNote Software Availability at UMass Worcester

The Lamar Soutter Library is pleased to provide the University of Massachusetts Medical School with EndNote software for both Windows and Mac users.  
The latest version of the software offered by the library (as of May 2019) is EndNote X9.

The license covers UMMS students, faculty and staff, and staff of our clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health Care. The software can be installed on UMMS or UMMHC computers and up to two personal computers per user.

PC Installation Information

Instructions for EndNote X9 on PCs that are provided by the school:

  1. On the windows search bar type “software center” and hit enter.
  2. Find EndNote on the list of applications and click on it.
  3. Click Install on the next screen.
  4. When completed, EndNote will be found under the Start Menu / Endnote Folder.


macOS Installation (School Owned Computers)

macOS Installation on computers provided by the school:


  1. Launch the “Self” from your Applications folder.
  2. With the default “Software” category selected, browse for “EndNote X9”
  3. Click the “Install” button below the EndNote icon.
  4. Find the newly installed version of EndNote in your Applications Folder.

EndNote Instruction

This 60-minute class will demonstrate how to set up a new library, how to import citations from MEDLINE, how to work with the citation style manager and how to add bibliographic references to a Microsoft Word document.


  • Attendees will know how to create an EndNote Library.
  • Attendees will know how to import citations from MEDLINE using either Ovid or PubMed.
  • Attendees will understand how to use EndNote with Microsoft Word in formatting bibliographic references for paper or grant submission.
