NICU: Resources and Links for Families

UMass Memorial NICU NICview Program

One of the most difficult days that families endure is when they have to leave their newborn infant in the hospital following the mother’s discharge.  Bonding between parents and their new baby is as important in the NICU as it is at home and this new program helps families develop that bond with their hospitalized infant. NICview is provided free-of-charge and if you can access the Internet, then you can use NICview. The video image is a provided by a webcam present at each NICU bedspace and this streaming video (without sound) and can be accessed through any Internet-enabled device.

The NICview cameras allow families to view their hospitalized infant from any internet-enabled device, such as a computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone or gaming system. Each family is provided with a individual username and password for their infant and the parents only have access to their child or children. The streaming video is protected by 256-bit SSL encryption and NICview does not store any patient information, email addresses or record any of the video.

Viewing

Viewing times are established with your infant’s nurse and usually consist of 1-4 hour blocks of time when your baby is sleeping, avoiding any procedures or exams.

However, there are times that due to your baby’s medical status or procedures that need to occur that a viewing time may need to be rescheduled.  Also, during a viewing period, the nurse may need to use the privacy button when they are performing a procedure (a blood draw, for example).

How Do We Sign Up?

If your family is interested in using the NICview service, your bedside nurse or the NICU librarian can help. You will need to sign a separate hospital consent giving permission to use the NICview system and your bedside nurse or the NICU librarian can set up a username and password for your baby.
