Library Service Point: Access Electronic Resources

Access Library Electronic Resources Remotely With Proxy Service

A Proxy Service allows you to access electronic resources that the Lamar Soutter Library subscribes to while off-campus.

Only those currently affiliated with UMass Chan Medical School & UMass Memorial Health Care have proxy access:

  • UMass Chan Faculty, Staff, Students, Residents, Fellows, Post-Docs, and Retired Faculty
  • UMass Chan - Baystate Faculty, Residents, and Fellows
  • UMass Chan - Lahey Faculty, Residents, and Fellows
  • UMass Memorial Health Care Staff

Preceptors must apply for faculty status in order to be eligible for proxy access. Preceptors should contact the Office of Medical Education to expedite the process. If a faculty member is working with non-UMass Chan students on a rotation, those students are eligible for proxy access for the length of their rotation.

Request Access to Library Electronic Resources

To request a library account, please submit the Library Requests Form. Your request will be reviewed for eligibility and library staff will contact you within 3 business days.

How to Access Electronic Resources

We recommend starting your search for print or electronic resources from our library website to ensure easy access to full text books and articles:

Search the Library Catalog:

  1.  From https://library.umassmed.edu, look for the search box on the home page.
  2. With "Library Catalog" selected, search for the title or author you are looking for or select "Advanced Search"
  3. The library catalog defaults to show only resources held by the UMass Chan Lamar Soutter Library. Select "Expand My Results" on the left to broaden your search.

"Get PDF!" Search:

  1. From https://library.umassmed.edu homepage search box
  2. Click the Library Catalog drop down and select "Get PDF!"
  3. Paste in the article's digital object identifier (DOI) or PubMed ID (PMID)

Browse the A-Z Database List

  1. From https://library.umassmed.edu,
  2. Hover over "Find & Borrow" Menu Tab
  3. Select A-Z Databases

Install Libkey Nomad on your browser to help electronic resource vendors recognize you are affiliated with UMass Chan Medical School - Lamar Soutter Library. Learn how to install this browser extension here.

If You're On Campus Internet

If you are on UMMS or UMMHC wifi networks, or connected to UMass Chan Ethernet, the resource vendors will recognize the campus IP addresses and know you're affiliated with UMass Chan. You will NOT see the proxy login page. If you experience an error, please check which wifi network you are connected to, and then reach out through Ask a Librarian for support. EDUROAM will not work for resource access or printing in the library.

If You're Off Campus, Authenticate with Proxy Service

EDUROAM WiFi and the UMass Chan VPN (Avanti) are NOT reliable ways to access electronic resources. Please disconnect the UMass Chan VPN, and start your access path at the library website:  https://library.umassmed.edu/

The Proxy service requires you to login with UMass Chan Multi-Factor Authentication, or your non-UMass Chan email and library account password. This verifies to the resource vendors that you are affiliated with UMass Chan Lamar Soutter Library.

Log in with your UMass Chan (umassmed.edu) email account will redirect you to UMass Chan Multi-Factor Authentication (SSO). Login with your campus username and password (not your Library Account).

Log in with non-UMass Chan email, you will login with the email associated with your library account, and your library account password:

  4.  You will be redirected to the resource you have selected.

Questions about your Library Account? Please submit an Ask a Librarian or email Lamar_Soutter_Library@umassmed.edu

For instructions on resetting your password, go to the Library Account Tab

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

VPN is not a reliable way to access library resources. Please try accessing library resources from the library website using the Proxy instructions above.

VPN service is managed by Information Technology (IT) department at UMass Chan Medical School. They give complete instructions on the UMass Chan website, including system requirements and login instructions.
