Kathleen Biebel, MD

Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry

Dr. Kathleen Biebel, Ph.D., is a Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and the Assistant Director of Operations at the UMMS Center for Mental Health Services Research (CMHSR). She has served as PI, Co-Investigator, and Evaluator on SAMHSA/CMHS, NIMH and foundation-funded projects focused on adults with serious mental illness, community integration, and family life. Her work has also focused on dissemination and implementation of mental health policy and programs. Dr. Biebel has worked for SAMHSA/CMHS as a Family-Centered Care Consultant, advising policy-makers and federal program officers on policy initiatives regarding families living with mental illness. In her role as Assistant Director of Operations at the CMHSR, Dr. Biebel oversees collaborations between UMMS and the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (MA/DMH), while maintaining a special focus on bridging science to service, and translating and disseminating research findings to inform policy and intervention development. She is currently leading a working partnership with MA /DMH, and the UMMS's Department of Psychiatry, Lamar Soutter Library, and the Mental Health Agency Research Network to redesign the CMHSR web-based dissemination efforts. This initiative is focused on producing usable and useful web-based products specifically for behavioral health consumers, family members, and providers. Dr. Biebel provides ongoing expertise and support to the CMHSR faculty and staff for grant writing, data analysis, interagency workgroups, and program evaluation. 

 

Nancy Byatt, DO, MBA

Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Obstetrics & Gynecology

Nancy Byatt, D.O., M.B.A. completed her undergraduate degree, Honors Scholar Research Program, and College Scholars Research Program in Behavioral Neuroscience at Lehigh University. Dr. Byatt concurrently earned her medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and MBA from the New York Institute of Technology. She trained as a psychiatric resident at UMass Medical School/UMass Memorial Health Care where she was chief resident in psychosomatic medicine and co-chief resident in psychopharmacology research. She then completed a psychosomatic medicine fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Byatt joined the faculty at UMass Medical School in July 2008 as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and in 2012 was awarded a secondary appointment in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Byatt is a psychosomatic medicine psychiatrist with subspecialty expertise in perinatal mental health. She provides expert psychiatric consultation to medical, obstetrical and surgical providers in inpatient settings. She also provides outpatient short-term treatment and consultation for women suffering from mental illness during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Dr. Byatt’s research focuses on understanding and evaluating ways to improve depression outcomes for perinatal women and their children through health care system improvement. She is currently conducting research aimed to improve the uptake of evidence-based treatments for perinatal depression in obstetric settings.

 

Kristina Deligiannidis, MD

 Dr. Deligiannidis is Director of the Depression Specialty Clinic at UMass Memorial Medical Center and an expert in perinatal depression/anxiety. She completed her undergraduate degrees and an Honors Scholars Research Program in Neuroscience and Behavior at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. As a recipient of NIH pre-doctoral Intramural Research Training Awards, she trained in molecular neuroendocrinology research at the NIH/National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NIH/NICHD). Her research was in the neural regulation of melatonin in the pineal gland. Dr. Deligiannidis completed additional research training at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and NICHD during medical school and residency. She received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed her psychiatry residency and chief residency in psychopharmacology research at UMass Medical School (UMMS)/UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC). Dr. Deligiannidis joined faculty at UMMS in October 2009 as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.  Dr. Deligiannidis is the Director of the Depression Specialty Clinic, a regional referral center at UMMHC that specializes in the evaluation and treatment of adult patients suffering from major depression, psychotic depression, treatment-resistant depression and bipolar depression.

 

 Monika E. Kolodziej, PhD

Associate Director and Psychologist at Addiction and Co-morbidity Treatment Services at Ambulatory Psychiatry Services

Expertise: Substance Addiction, Dual Diagnosis, Substance Abuse Treatment

 Dr. Monika Kolodziej’s research and clinical practice specializes in assessing and treating substance use disorders in combination with psychiatric disorders and chronic medical conditions from clinical outcomes and organizational change perspectives. She has been involved in funded projects and clinical endeavors that address: (a) pharmacotherapy for young adults in recovery from opiate addiction, (b) wellness interventions, (c) organizational endeavors to reduce tobacco use in treatment settings through the Addressing Tobacco Through Organizational Change (ATTOC) approach, and (d) integration of behavioral health care with medical care for persons with mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders.  As one of the founders of the Central Massachusetts Addiction Consortium, Dr. Kolodziej is committed to community engagement and leadership to promote treatment and recovery. In addition, she serves as an outpatient psychotherapy supervisor in the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, a clinical supervisor of the addiction rotation in the Psychology Internship Program, and instructor of didactic seminars to trainees, fellows, and residents. Combined, these activities allow her to have a well-rounded approach to clinical and organizational change-oriented studies and programs, to understand the importance of community partners’ engagement in all phases of study planning, including implementation and sustainability, as well as to provide evaluative input that can meaningfully impact clinical provision of services by staff and trainees alike.

 

 Wendy Marsh, MD

Assistant Professor of Psychiatry

Expertise: Bipolar Disorder, Mood Disorders, Menopause

 

Wendy Marsh, MD, MS received her BA from Pomona College, in Claremont, CA and then completed medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. During medical school, she was awarded an NIH fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where she researched depression and behavioral endocrinology. She completed her residency in psychiatry at Stanford University, where she researched mood disorders in women in her final years. Then, she continued at Stanford as a fellow in clinical research, studying bipolar disorder and reproductive endocrinology on an NIMH Biobehavioral Training Grant. Her work produced a number of peer-reviewed journal articles, presentations, and book chapters.  Since her arrival at the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Marsh earned a Master’s of Science in Clinical Investigation. She primarily researches bipolar disorder and menopause, which is supported by a career development award. She also sees patients with an emphasis on treating and studying mood disorders in relation to reproductive phases.
