Access Services: Policies

General Policies and Hours

  • Adherence to the UMass Chan social distancing guidelines is expected
  • Masks are optional in the medical school building
  • The Library Service Point is staffed Monday-Thursday 8:00AM-6:00PM and Friday 8:00AM-4:00PM
  • Eligible badge access only after hours (24/7)
  • Identification badges must be worn at all times
  • No outside visitors or members of the public are allowed in the Library at this time due to COVID-19
  • Talking on cell phones and video conference calls is allowed on the first and second floors; please be mindful of the noise level
  • The computer classroom is closed until further notice
  • The first and second floors of the Library can be used for studying and for Zoom calls.  However, the third floor of the Library is strictly for quiet study.  Please, no Zoom, phone use, or socializing on the third floor

Archives and Rare Book Room

Researchers wishing to use archival materials should contact the Archivist by email or by telephone at 508-856-2204

Food and Beverages

  • Beverages are allowed in non-spill containers such as travel mugs, water bottles, etc.
  • Keurig Station is available: BYO beverage container, K Cups, sweetener, and milk.  If you would like hot water, use the Keurig hot water feature

Gifts

  • No book donations can be accepted at this time, except for those written by UMass Chan affiliates or about the history of UMass Chan
  • Monetary gifts to the library are always welcome

Print Collections and Anatomical Models

  • Books are aired for three (3) days before returning to the shelf.  If you are unable to locate a print book, please go to the Library Service Point for assistance
  • Clean anatomical models before and after use
  • Return books to a nearby designated cart or the Library Service Point after in-library use

Reference Services

  • Ask-A-Librarian service will be staffed Monday-Friday, 9:00AM-5:00PM, and as needed other times
  • One-on-one or group Zoom appointments can be booked with a librarian
  • All library instruction is booked and conducted using Zoom

Seating

  • Sit in designated spots only
  • Do not move chairs or tables around
  • Clean work areas before and after use

Study Carrels, Group Study Rooms, Workstations, and Public and Clinical Computers

  • Reservations for a study carrel can be made through the online self-service reservation system.  See the complete Library Study Carrel Reservation Policy for guidelines and frequently asked questions
  • Masks are always required while using carrels, group study rooms, workstations, pods, computers, and other study spaces
  • Please do not leave food, books, or other items of personal value in the carrels
  • Only one (1) person allowed in a group study room or study carrel
  • There is at least one whiteboard marker in each carrel available for use.  It is up to the carrel user to clean this marker.  Additional whiteboard markers and erasers are at the cleaning stations on each floor
  • Computer workstations have reusable keyboard covers.  Do not remove them
  • Clean work areas before and after use

Whiteboards

  • Whiteboard markers will be placed at cleaning stations.  Please wipe them before and after use. The table will be cleaned and replenished by library staff
  • Large shared whiteboards will each be cleaned by library staff every Monday
